Sony AS15 2013 Review by The Good Ride

The Sony AS15 Action Cam is new on the scene for 2013.  It has a design that is very similar to the Contour camera which isn’t terribly original but a good choice compared to copying the GoPro Shape. With the waterproof housing, which is necessary, it’s pretty big. The camera itself isn’t even water resistant so one spray from your friend could ruin it.

Set Up: What we have found is that the Sony really is difficult to set up and not very intuitive to operate at all. Peter (good ride rider) spent a whole night reading the manual and still doesn’t quite understand it.

Using it: The casing also seals in the heat so the camera has overheating issues.  It’s not that much of an issue because you will be in cold weather but if it runs for a long period of time on a warm day it might shut off. The video is really clear and looks good on snow and that is one shining positive. We would like to see Sony make the actual camera waterproof to like 3ft or something so the case ins’t necessary and add a screw mount to it similar to most cameras so it can easily mount to a mono pod or helmet without an attachment. This way the goggle mount wouldn’t be as bouncy and saggy due to the weight. It would make this much more snow friendly.

Battery Life: The Sony AS15 has middle ground battery life and it can handle a day of off and on shooting.

In our opinion Sony missed the mark here when it comes to ease of use from the internal controls to the casing but you cant debate how solid the video quality is. So if you are looking for good video quality then you have it with the Sony AS15

Here is a little sample from our demo time in 1080p at 30fps.
